The Passing of Dr. Charles (Charlie) Sydnor
It is with heavy hearts; we share that our dear friend and colleague Dr. Charles (Charlie) Sydnor has passed away. Charlie was an integral part of the Virginia Holocaust Museum from the very beginning, dedicating his time, research and heart to our mission. As a nationally recognized historian his contributions to the field of Holocaust studies are immeasurable. Charlie dedicated his life to preserving truth, fostering understanding and educating future generations about one of the darkest chapters in human history. Through his scholarship, teaching and commitment to remembrance, he touched countless lives and ensured that the stories of survivors, victims and families would not be forgotten.
Charlie’s compassion, integrity and dedication to historical truth shaped his work at the Museum and as an expert witness for the Office of Special Investigations in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, testifying in the de-naturalization cases brought against former SS concentration camp guards. As an expert witness he helped to bring legal justice for Holocaust victims and their families.
A talented and eloquent speaker Charlie once said, “Be not afraid to make history and to change the world. You can and you must. The hope that sustains the human spirit, even through the darkest passages and the brightest days, is the simple belief that what is to come will always be better than what is now.” We will continue to honor the words, life and legacy of Charlie through our work here at the Virginia Holocaust Museum, reminding us of the collective responsibility we all share to combating hatred and preserving memory.
It must be said that even with all of Charlie’s accomplishments and recognition he was down-to-earth and humble. To some of us he was a boss and mentor; to all of us, he was simply our friend Charlie. We miss his kindness, humor and warmth.
Charlie, your voice, your work and your impact live on.
Our hearts are with Charlie’s family, friends and all who had the honor of learning from him and working alongside him.
Memorial Service Details
Services will be held on Sunday, December 14, at 2:00 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of Emory & Henry followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. A private interment will be held in the Holston Conference Cemetery at Emory.
