SUMMARY:Virginia Holocaust Museum Presents: Carolyn Enger’s The Mischlinge Exposé
DESCRIPTION:Internationally celebrated American pianist Carolyn Enger will present her powerful live documentary\, The Mischlinge Exposé\, at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday\, September 14\, in the Virginia Holocaust Museum’s historic Choral Synagogue. \nThe date is significant because on September 15\, 1935\, the Nazi regime enacted two pivotal race laws—the Reich Citizenship Law and the Law for the Protection of German Blood and German Honor. These laws formally defined and discriminated against individuals known as Mischlinge—a derogatory term for those with one or two Jewish grandparents\, considered neither fully Jewish nor fully German under Nazi ideology. \nThe Mischlinge Exposé explores this little-known aspect of Holocaust history through a compelling blend of live piano performance\, video\, and audio testimony. Enger shares the stories of her father and godmother\, both of whom were labeled Mischling by the Nazis. Their testimonies are interwoven with Enger’s performance of works by salon-era composers who converted to Christianity in the years before the war\, as well as pieces that grapple with identity in the postwar era. \nThrough this deeply personal lens\, Enger examines what it meant to exist between worlds in early 20th-century Germany—and invites audiences to reflect on universal themes of identity\, inclusion\, and empathy. \nEvent Details:\n📅 Sunday\, September 14\n🕔 5:00 p.m.\n📍 Choral Synagogue\, Virginia Holocaust Museum\n🎟️ Free and open to the public\n🪑 Seating is first-come\, first-served\n📌 Advance registration is required and must be completed at least 24 hours in advance. No walk-ins will be admitted. \nEnger maintains an active performance schedule across two continents\, with recent appearances at the National Gallery in Oslo\, Baruch College in New York\, the Museum of Jewish Heritage\, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.

SUMMARY:“Choice\, Human Behavior and the Holocaust” Educator Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Location:  Virginia Holocaust Museum \nJoin the Virginia Holocaust Museum for a day of professional development focused on examining the events of the Holocaust through the lens of collaboration and complicity. \nThe Nazis could not have carried out the Holocaust alone. Ordinary people played a key role in the persecution and murder of Europe’s Jews.  How did individuals respond to the persecution and murder of their Jewish classmates\, coworkers\, neighbors\, and friends? How did relationships and roles shape their decisions? \nLearn the history\, best practices\, and resources to use in the classroom to help your students critically examine the choices and behaviors of people during the Holocaust.  Decision-making\, the responsibility of the individual and the effects on victims of the Holocaust are also a central theme of this workshop. \nEducators will hear from Dr. Kerrie Taber author of “Quarantining Hate.” Dr. Taber will share how to respond to growing threats of hatred and how in learning and confronting her family’s past; her grandfather was responsible for the deaths of 14\,000 Lithuanian Jews during the Holocaust\, which has influenced her work to speak out against injustice and hate. \nThis workshop is free for educators and includes: \n\nBreakfast\, Coffee\, and Lunch\nEducator resources\nA certificate of attendance\n\nRegister here! \nDeadline for Registration is April 29th\, 2025 \nA limited number of scholarships are available for teachers 120+ miles from Richmond.  Scholarships are to help cover travel\, housing\, and meals.  Please contact Megan Ferenczy at mferenczy@vaholocaust.org to apply.        \n

SUMMARY:Kerrie Taber\, the author of “Quarantining Hate” at the JCC’s 5400 Club
DESCRIPTION:Kerrie Taber\, the author of “Quarantining Hate”\, will be speaking at the JCC’s 5400 Club on Monday\, May 5th. The program is from 12:30-1:30pm. Registration for the book talk at the JCC is free and open to the public. In addition to in-person attendance\, attending the program on Zoom is also an option. \nAfter seeing hate grow for a decade\, Kerrie Taber wrote Quarantining Hate\, which is about how a society needs to push back against hate to prevent it from spreading. Using her personal story about finding out her grandfather was a wanted WWII war criminal directly involved in over 14\,000 Jewish people’s deaths in Lithuania and research into society and hate\, Taber hopes that readers will see that combating hate requires active resistance to its spread. \nThe event is free and open to the public\, but registration is recommended. \nIn addition to in-person attendance\, attending the program on Zoom is also an option. \n

SUMMARY:Teaching about Kristallnacht and the Kindertransport through Personal Stories
DESCRIPTION:Educator Workshop at the Virginia Holocaust Museum \nJoin the Virginia Holocaust Museum and Centropa for a day of professional development focused on Kristallnacht and the Kindertransport.   \nOn November 9-10\, 1938\, the Nazi regime directed pogroms against Jews throughout the German Reich (Germany\, occupied Austria and Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia). Known as Kristallnacht\, local people and SS hunted\, kidnapped\, and murdered Jews\, burned synagogues\, and destroyed shops. This was a turning point in the Holocaust\, an increase in violence against Jews. The following month\, the British government agreed to take Jewish children from these countries. The trains that transported almost 10\,000 children from 1938-1940—from everyone and everything they knew to England—were known as Kindertransports. \nIn this workshop\, we will share first-hand stories of Kristallnacht and Kindertransport from Centropa interviews\, along with photographs\, short multimedia films\, and podcasts that bring this history to life for your students. \nThis workshop is free for educators and includes: \n\nBreakfast\, Coffee\, and Lunch\nEducator Resources\nA certificate of attendance\n\nTo Register Click HERE! \nTo Download the Program Flyer click HERE!

SUMMARY:ArtoberVA PWYW | The Butterfly Project & Archives Tour at VHM
DESCRIPTION:VHM is thrilled to join dozens of other organizations around the region in hosting an event for the artoberVA All-Access Pay-What-You-Will series presented by @cultureworksrva. \nOn Oct. 26th at 1 PM\, join the Virginia Holocaust Museum for a behind-the-scenes archives tour and participate in The Butterfly Project! \nThe Butterfly Project is a call to action through education\, the arts and memorial-making. By painting ceramic butterflies\, which are displayed as symbols of resilience and hope\, participants remember the 1.5 million children killed during the Holocaust. \nAfter learning about artifacts from our collections\, each participant will learn about a child who perished during the Holocaust and paint a ceramic butterfly in their memory. All butterflies painted will then be fired on behalf of the Museum and eventually used for a display here at VHM! \nWe recommend this event for adults and students 6th grade and up. While this event is free and open to the public\, space is limited. Register HERE! \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:GIADO: Directed by Golan Rise & Sharon Yaish
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented by the Embassy of Israel \nModerated by Efrat Hochstetler\, Counselor for Public Diplomacy \nHosted by the Holocaust Museum & Weinstein Jewish Community Center at the JCC \nAt the young age of 20\, Yosef Dadosh was among 3\,000 Jews sent from their homes in Benghazi to the Giado concentration camp nestled in the heart of the Libyan desert. Amidst extreme conditions\, he bravely chronicled life within the camp through a secret diary. For seven decades\, his diary remained locked away in a closet\, concealed from the world\, until after his passing. Yosef’s diary provides an extraordinary and rare window into the harrowing routine at Giado. It captures the atrocities endured by its inhabitants in real-time\, offering an intimate and chilling account of their suffering. Despite his dedication to raising awareness about the Holocaust of Libyan Jews and fighting for its recognition by the State of Israel\, Yosef chose to keep his ordeal hidden from his children. \nIn an endeavor to bring this compelling story to life on the screen\, a unique model of the camp was constructed and photographed. Through the use of animations\, this model serves as a visual bridge\, connecting the haunting texts of the diary with the stark reality of the camp. The resulting film merges historical accuracy with a distinctive cinematic language\, offering a powerful and immersive exploration of Yosef’s profound journey and the dark legacy he left behind. \nTo learn more or to register\, click HERE! \n

SUMMARY:Lecture & Book Signing: A Rosenwald Schools Journey - Julius Rosenwald\, Booker T. Washington\, and the 4\,978 Schools That Changed America
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 5\, 2024 6:00PM \nA Better Life for Their Children: A Rosenwald Schools Journey: cohosted by the Virginia Museum of History and Culture and the Virginia Holocaust Museum. \nA Better Life for Their Children – Born to Jewish immigrants\, Julius Rosenwald rose to lead Sears\, Roebuck & Company and turn it into the world’s largest retailer. Born into slavery\, Booker T. Washington became the founding principal of Tuskegee Institute. In 1912 the two men launched an ambitious program to partner with Black communities across the segregated South to build public schools for Black children. This watershed moment in the history of philanthropy—one of the earliest collaborations between Jews and Black Americans—drove dramatic improvement in African American educational attainment and fostered the generation who became the leaders and foot soldiers of the civil rights movement. Of the original 4\,978 Rosenwald schools built between 1912 and 1937 across fifteen southern and border states\, only about 500 survive. Though some have been repurposed and a handful remain active schools\, many remain unrestored and at risk of collapse. To tell this story visually\, Andrew Feiler drove more than 25\,000 miles\, photographed 105 schools\, and interviewed dozens of former students\, teachers\, preservationists\, and community leaders in all fifteen of the program states. The book and exhibition of this work is\, A Better Life for Their Children: Julius Rosenwald\, Booker T. Washington\, and the 4\,978 Schools that Changed America. The exhibition is on view at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture through April 20\, 2025. Author\, photographer\, and exhibition curator Andrew Feiler will share images and stories from his extraordinary journey into the history of Rosenwald schools. \nThe lecture will be followed by an author book signing and light refreshments. \nThe content and opinions expressed in these presentations are solely those of the speaker and not necessarily of the Virginia Museum of History & Culture and/or the Virginia Holocaust Museum. \nTicket Pricing: \nGeneral Admission – $20\nVMHC Members – $10\nProgram Notes: \nTickets are required for in-person admission.
