Henri Isadore Maizels, of Henrico County, Virginia, one of Central Virginia’s last Holocaust survivors, passed away after a long illness on November 26, 2023, at age 83. Born on December 4, 1939, in Paris, France to Charles and Sara Maizels, Henri was orphaned during World War II. His American family members located him after the war and brought him to the United States. Henri was raised by his Uncle and Aunt, Nathan and Miriam Maizels, in Richmond, Virginia.

After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1959, Henri enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he played saxophone in the U.S. Fifth Army Band in Europe. While in the Army, Henri found his true calling as a flutist. Throughout life, Henri could often be seen enjoying local music festivals while walking and playing two flutes simultaneously!!!

After his tour of duty, Henri lived in Ibiza, Spain, for 14 years where he owned and operated a famous hair salon and made many, many lifelong friends from all walks of life. Upon his return to Richmond, Henri continued to practice the art of hairdressing with a European flair.
Music was Henri’s true calling. He was an outstanding musician who devoted the last decades of his life to playing with the T.J.H.S. alumni cadet band and many others. Henri always carried at least one flute in his black bag and often sat in with other acts. Henri was often featured in multiple books, newspapers and magazines.

Frenchie has been one of Richmond’s favorites since his arrival on U.S. soil. There was always a kind, warm greeting for all. Good karma was Henri’s hallmark!!! We have lost a bright and kind light that gently lit the way to a beautiful way of being. Henri truly loved and appreciated his “Lady B” who filled his last year with warmth, comfort and joy.

Henri is survived by his brother (cousin) Dr. Max Maizels, his loving nieces, Dr. Neena Maizels and Danielle Maizels, his loving nephew, Nathan Maizels (Kirsten); along with many cousins, friends, band-mates, and co-workers.. Henri will be long remembered, sorely missed and always GREATLY LOVED!!!

The graveside service in his honor will be held Monday, November 27th at 3pm at the cemetery chapel of Richmond Beth-El Cemetery at Forest Lawn 4000 Pilots Lane, Richmond, Virginia 23222. The family invites you to the gathering after the graveside service at the Virginia Holocaust Museum 2000 E Cary St, Richmond, VA 23223.
